The title of this post are the words of Giordano Bruno finish reading the sentence for heresy.
Bruno was sentenced to death for positions contrary to Catholic doctrine and for refusing to renounce (as did Galileo Galilei). Fu arso vivo il 17 febbraio 1600, 411 anni fa, a Roma, a Campo de' Fiori.

In the penultimate decade of 1800 an international committee, comprising among others, by Ernst Renan , Victor Hugo, Herbert Spencer and Silvio Spaventa , is the organizer of the initiative to erect a monument in memory of the philosopher. The ecclesiastical power is firmly opposed to this initiative, and it degenerated when, in January 1888, a student demonstration in favor of the monument was put down by police. In December the City Council finally granted permission and the space in Piazza Campo de 'Fiori, after the then prime minister Francesco Crispi had a favorable opinion. On June 9, 1889 the monument by the sculptor Ettore Ferrari Freemason, was finally inaugurated.
